Do you spend your share of cash on movie rentals each month?  If you are an avid renter, you know it can add up quickly.  If you still live in 1999, you may actually belong to a walk-in rental store – likely Blockbuster (if there’s still one open near you), as Hollywood Video is gone, and many places are shutting down.  This is 2010… people either Redbox or Netflix these days.

That’s right America, no more $4.99 to rent the latest flick.  It’s a good thing too, because people weren’t paying it.  Even I admit to being guilty of preferring to stream a new release for free online rather than actually paying for it.  Still, piracy is bad (m’mkay?) and if you are going to be a good movie-watching citizen of the world, you have to pay your dues.

Redbox is the obvious choice for paying less to rent one movie for one night.  At only $1 per day, charged to your debit or credit card, you can get the hottest new releases at almost any grocery store now.  However, if you are like me, and you almost never return a video on time, it can be costly.  Redbox tallies that dollar per day up to a full 30 days, when you then own the video.  Don’t expect them to mail you a nice box to put it in.  The little Redbox case is the best you get for $30 a pop.

So if late fees are your concern, Netflix provides a reasonable alternative.  You pay a monthly fee, get so many rentals at a time, and when you mail them back, they send you another from your queue.  If you don’t get the DVD back in the mail in a timely fashion, don’t worry – there’s no late fees, you just don’t get a fresh flick until you send back the old one.

Blockbuster Online offers the same service for a similar price, but here is where Netflix trumps all… Netflix gives you access to their massive library of Watch Instantly movies and television shows.  Like I said, it’s 2010.  Isn’t it time to get an HDMI port on your new computer when you order it?  Don’t pay too much for Television when you can get it cheap.  Here’s what I do:

We subscribe to Netflix’s $8.99 per month plan.  This gives us access to the Watch Instantly database, plus  1 DVD rental at a time.  This gives us plenty to watch on a regular basis.  We also keep an eye out for when the hottest new releases arrive at Redbox, and use the redbox.com website to reserve the ones we can’t wait to get.  Basically, we have unlimited stuff to watch for under $20 a month.  We don’t have cable, we don’t have satellite, but we always have something fresh and new to watch for everyone in the family.

ReWatch – Volume 1

Sometimes great movies get lost in the fold.  Some are before their time, others just didn’t get quite enough butts in movie theater seats in time for their release.  In ReWatch, Mark G. takes a look at some great movies you may have never seen, or need to see again.

This edition’s film to watch again:  Reign of Fire (2002)
Available to Watch Instantly on Netflix?
Yes
Available at Redbox?  No

For my first edition of ReWatch, I’ve selected a movie that was a sleeper hit for sure.  When it was released in 2002, the only big name actor in it was Matthew McConaughey.  Christian Bale had some success with American Psycho for sure, but he was certainly not the giant action hero he is today.

Standing by leadman Bale in this fairly low-budget Dragon-Apocalypse flick is non other than Gerard Butler.  This movie was way before he blew up with his 300 success and became one of the top action stars of today’s hits such as Law Abiding Citizen, and Gamer.

I remember watching years ago when it first came out, and I recall liking it.  I thought that it was a pretty good action flick for such a mediocre cast.  Here, 8 years later, it turns out that Reign of Fire has a mammoth cast of action stars, and has enough momentum to play like it just came out last week.

It should also be noted that even though Matthew McConaughey turned out to be the least successful action star out of the 3, he gives an awesome performance as Denton Van Zan – a beefed up redneck renegade marine with a love for Dragonslaying.  Great Cast, Great Action, Great Movie.  Make sure you put Reign of Fire into your queue soon!
